As a PERFORMER…
As a performer, I believe in showing up fully in the moment—giving all of myself to the dance, the audience, and the collaborative process. For me, dance is not just about executing steps or following choreography; it’s about expressing the core of who I am and connecting deeply with everyone involved. I approach each performance with an open mind, ready to embrace whatever the process holds, and a soft sternum that allows my heart and body to respond freely to the music, the space, and the energy of the collaborators around me.
The concept of a "soft sternum" is central to how I enter a choreographic process. To me, it represents openness—an invitation to vulnerability, yet also a foundation of strength that comes from being open, present, and grounded. This physical posture reflects the mental and emotional readiness to let the dance unfold rather than force it, creating space for improvisation, intuition, and deeper creative exchange. It’s a balance of being open to influence while maintaining a grounded sense of self.
When I perform, I place a strong emphasis on engagement—not just with the audience, but with my fellow collaborators. The dance itself becomes a conversation, one that I approach with empathy and care. I think of myself as a conduit for the story or emotion being conveyed, and it’s my responsibility to communicate that with authenticity and clarity. Whether I am onstage in front of a live audience or working in the studio with other dancers, I strive to bring my full attention to the experience, staying attuned to the moment and to those around me.
To me, being a performer means putting service above ego—service to the work, to my fellow dancers, to the choreographer, and to the audience. It’s not about showcasing my abilities or seeking approval; it’s about offering something meaningful, something that resonates. This is where the empathy comes in: understanding the emotional arc of the piece and the emotional journey of the audience. I carefully consider the impact of each movement and each moment, ensuring that my dance is not just an expression of skill but of feeling.
